A MARCH WILL TAKE PLACE THIS SUNDAY AT 11 A.M. IN PLAZA ITALIA CALLING ALL TO SUPPORT THE MAPUCHE RESISTANCE.

CHILE — The organization Meli Wixan Mapu announced the following statement, which can also be found in full here.

“We call to you all, Mapuche and non-Mapuche, to demonstrate our resistance to state policies which are intended solely to placate and demobilise the Mapuche Resistance…

We know that the state of Chile implements its laws and institutions to repress any outbreaks of social struggle, and it has been particularly repressive to our Mapuche people… We have not forgotten our prisoners and killed Weichafe…

We salute the struggle of the Mapuche resistance as it moves forwards.

We salute our kona pu political prisoners and demand their immediate release.

We reject state policies that deepen the capitalist economic model and prey every day on our territory…

We hope to be greeted with your respect and solidarity …”

Protests escalated last week when a Mapuche, identified as José Mauricio Quintriqueo Huaiquimil, was killed in the Lleu Lleu sector on October 2nd. Huaiquimil was run over by a tractor whilst trespassing on private land.

The driver, identified as José Cañete, was arrested on the scene but the controversy has sparked new resistance within the Mapuche community. Three molotov cocktails were thrown at police forces and two trucks were set alight at Huaiquimil’s funeral.
