January 17th 2011 - Press release

‘Hrant Dink Commemorative Conference’ on the ‘Persecution of Indigenous Peoples, Unrepresented Nations and other Minorities’-
House of Lords – Westminster – London – United Kingdom.

The ‘Hrant Dink Commemorative Conference’ on the  ‘Persecution of Indigenous Peoples, Unrepresented Nations and other Minorities’ (of Turkey, Pakistan, South America and Iraq) which marks the fourth anniversary of Hrant Dink's assassination, will take place at the House of Lords, Westminster, London on 18th January 2011.

The Conference which is sponsored by  Baroness Finlay of Llandaff and Baroness Cox will include statements from a diverse list of international guest speakers, including indigenous representative Reynaldo Mariqueo, Charge d'Affaires on international relations of the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia, speaking on the 1880s Genocide of the Mapuche Nation of Wallmapu, currently illegally occupied by the states of Chile and Argentina and their ongoing persecution in Chile under present day successive governments; whilst Eilian Williams will provide a Tribute to assassinated Turkish –Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, and his world-wide significance to the principle of freedom of speech. Dink, who tirelessly advocated for Turkish-Armenian reconciliation was assassinated by a 17 year old Turkish nationalist in 2007.

The global genocide and persecution of indigenous peoples, unrepresented nations and minorities continues across the world today, rarely registering within the world’s mainstream media particularly in the case of atrocities against indigenous nations and peoples; yet these human rights violations and accompanying governmental ethnic cleansing policies continue to daily destroy ancient, rich and diverse cultures and peoples across the globe. These atrocities often fuelled by extremist nationalist sentiment and propaganda, frequently arise from a conflict of interests relating to territories rich in natural resources which lead to strategic assimilation measures being taken by unscrupulous systems of governance, often resulting in violent persecution and genocide. Many such cases represent the aftermath of colonial occupation and in themselves reflect a neo-colonialism symbolising modern statism in its most negative, anachronistic aspect.

Such violations represent a breach of international legislations and covenants such as the ‘United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples’, ‘The United Nations Declaration on Human Rights’ and ‘Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples’ among others. To this end the inherent right to the freedom of expression is fundamental in securing equal rights and equal participation for minorities and non- minorities alike.

The Hrant Dink Commemorative Conference ‘Persecution of Indigenous Peoples, Unrepresented Nations and other Minorities’ (of Turkey, Pakistan, South America and Iraq) on 18th January, (eve of Hrant Dink Day) between  3 p.m. and 6 p.m in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords, Westminster.
