Press Release on Mapuche Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike

Monday, July 12, 2010

The Mapuche political prisoners, currently being held in the “El Manzano” detention centre in Concepcion, inform the Mapuche Nation and public international and national opinion of the following:

Beginning today Monday, July 12th, 2010, we commence a liquid HUNGER STRIKE.

This drastic and extreme decision is made as a direct response to a series of situations in which we denounce the unjust political/judicial procedures that we are subject to and which violate our fundamental rights as MAPUCHE and as political prisoners.

In summary, we denounce the fact that we have been the subject of Media Setups carried out by the Public Ministry through Anti Mapuche prosecutors and corrupt police forces. It is in this way that the Chilean State, in defense of it's corporate interests in conflict with our People and in their intention to repress and annihilate the Mapuche Movement, criminalize the just cause of our communities, imprisoning and persecuting our people; imposing dictatorial and fascist laws upon honest social activists.

At the same time, we also denounce the existence of a strong and grotesque Anti-Mapuche campaign orchestrated by the economic and political Right of this country, who use their means of communication, their prosecutors and politicians as propoganda to influence public opinion.

Due to all of the above, we declare that we will continue our hunger strike unless the following just demands are met:

  1. STOP the application of the Antiterrorist Law against the Mapuche People. FINALLY abolish the Anti-terrorist Law originally legislated by the Pinochet dictatorship.

  2. STOP the processing of Mapuche People through Military Courts. Initiate the immediate Abolition of Military Courts in Chile.

  3. Freedom for ALL the Mapuche Political Prisoners throughout the Chilean State.

This is achieved by:

4.- Demilitarization of Mapuche zones where communities reclaim their political and territorial rights.

Lastly, we call on Our People to Mobilize, to protest and to struggle for what we believe is a just cause; including social and political organizations to remain alert to the situation.
