U.S. Electric Company PSEG Holding Causes Problems in Aysen, Chile.

June 16, 2003

The U.S. electric company, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSEG Holding), owner of the Chilean subsidiary Saesa (Edalaysen) and Chilquinta, began construction of a hydroelectric plant, located at the mouth of the Lake Atravesado, 2 years ago. The plant is located about 27 km from Coyhaique, in the Aysen zone in the 11th Region.

PSEG Holding, in order to carry out this hydroelectric project, has invested 14.5 million dollars and intends to generate 10.5 megawatts of energy. But since its beginning it has had serious problems with local property owners, whose property rights have been impacted by the flooding and lands and noncompliance with a relocation plan, required by the Environmental Evaluation issued by CONAMA (National Commission on the Environment).

Currently, residents of the Lake Atravesado region have submitted 3 legal cases against Edelaysen (PSEG), and in a surprising move, the Regional Commission on the Environment set a fine and made a resolution against the project due to noncompliance with the Environmental Evaluation Resolution.
