Chilean police torture Chief Juana Calfunao

Featured below are photographs revealing evidence of the torture suffered by the Mapuche authority, Lonko (chief) Juana Calfunao at the hands of the Chilean police. The Lonko calls for justice and the liberation of the Mapuche community.

On December 23rd 2005, a military contingent of the police force led by Cristian Alarcon, chief police officer of Padres Las Casas police station IX region of Chile, launched an assault on the Juan Paillalef community. During the assault Lonko Calfunao was brutally beaten together with her sister Luisa in the presence of their children and other members of the community. They were then taken to the above police station and were once again subject to inhuman, cruel and degrading treatment.

''The Magistrate Luz Monica Madiriaga ordered the defence lawyer Mauricio Torres to make investigations into the cause of the bruising on the face and extremities of the accused who were detained on Friday by the Special Forces". (Source: Newspaper El Gong - 24 December, 2005).
